Eid-al-Fitr or Eid-ul-Fitr is an Islamic festival celebrated by Muslims around the world. The day marks the end of the month of holy Ramadan. It is also known as the “Festival of Breaking the Fast”. Eid-al-Fitr 2020 will be celebrated on 25th May, Monday.

History

Eid-al-Fitr is a religious celebration observed during first three days of Shawwal. It is the only day when Muslims do not fast. As said, Prophet Muhammad started the festival of Eid-al-Fitr. He remarked about two festivals: Eid-al-Fitr and Eid-al-Adha. It is indicated by specific customs that these celebrations were started in Medina after Muhammad’s emigration to Mecca.

Celebration

Eid-al-Fitr begins on watching the first sight of the crescent moon. After that, a specific Eid prayer is done on this day, which is performed in large gatherings.

On this day, people provide charity, food, money to the poor. This is a day of social gatherings, festive meals, and giving gifts or Eidi. Every Muslim home cooks the famous sweet-dish called Seviyan on the day of Eid.

Eid-al-Fitr Amid Lockdown

The year 2020 has been surrounded by a pandemic outbreak that has distrupted common human life. If said about festivals, the month of Ramadan was celebrated amidst lockdown. So will be the day of Eid-al-Fitr too. This year, people will have to celebrate the ocassion following a few rules for protecting themselves and their loved ones.

Eid is a festival of communal prayer, family meals, social gatherings, and house-visits. Yet, this year, one will have to accept the measures of social distancing, avoid large family-friend gatherings and meals. Worshippers may need to maintain a particular distance between each other during namaz prayer, and to not get too close to people.
