The last and final part of celebrities in politics in India will feature some more celebs who gave politics a shot. It is surprising how many people left it mid-way, though. Read the previous articles here Bollywood celebrities who entered the world of politics : Part 1

1. Gautam Gambhir

The former Indian cricketer joined BJP as a key candidate from the East Delhi constituency in the presence of Union ministers Arun Jaitley and Ravi Shankar Prasad. After his opponent Atishi Marlena from the Aam Aadmi Party challenged him to a debate, Gambhir declined her challenge, saying he doesn’t believe in “dharna and debates.”

Gautam won the general elections by a whopping amount of votes against Atishi Marlena and Arvinder Singh Lovely.

2. Poonam Sinha

Shatrughan Sinha’s wife Poonam Sinha joined the Samajwadi Party in the presence of party chief Akhilesh Yadav’s wife, Dimple Yadav. She stood against the star candidate of BJP Minister Rajnath Singh in Lucknow this year and lost by a heavy number.

3. Gul Panag

Gul Panag is one of the most talented human beings to have ever existed. Apart from being a model, actress, biker, marathon runner and a certified pilot, she added another feather to her cap by taking part in the political world as well.

She was the Aam Aadmi Party candidate from Chandigarh in 2014 and was standing against the legendary actress Kirron Kher. However, she did win the elections and her candidature fell through.

4. Urmila Matondkar

The iconic 90s actress Urmila Matondkar joined the Indian National Congress in the presence of Rahul Gandhi. She stated that she joined the party because her ideologies matched the party’s and that she wanted to work towards serving the country.

She contested the election from Mumbai North Constituency but suffered an easy defeat at the hands of the strong BJP candidate Gopal Shetty. However, in September 2019, she submitted her resignation from the party claiming petty internal politics to be the reason behind her exit.

5. Smriti Irani

Smriti Zubin Irani is a Member of Parliament, elected to the Rajya Sabha from the state of Gujarat. She is currently the ‘Information and Broadcasting’ and ‘Textiles Minister’ in the Government of India.

She entered politics in 2003 with BJP. In 2011, she was taken in as an honorary Rajya Sabha member from Gujarat. In 2014, she was appointed as the Minister of Human Resource Development. However, due to much controversy surrounding her qualifications, she was moved to the Textiles Ministry. This year she takes on Rahul Gandhi in Amethi once again, after previously losing to him.

These were some of the few celebrities in politics in India who have experimented with a different field.
