TikTok was initially launched as Douyin in September 2016, in China. In 2017, the app was also launched by ByteDance, a Beijing-based internet technology company founded in 2012 by Zhang Yiming.
What led to the TikTok ban in India?
On June 29, the Indian government declared a ban of 59 Chinese-owned mobile applications in the country which included popular short video sharing platform TikTok as well.
However, the ban was enforced under Section 69A of the IT Act with relevant provisions of the Information Technology (Procedure and Safeguards for Blocking of Access of Information by Public) Rules 2009.
Tech giants Google and Apple have been ordered by the government to remove the Chinese social media app Tik Tok from their app stores and block downloads over diverse concerns.
This move is going to poorly hurt TikTok’s parent company, China’s ByteDance Ltd.
It has been banned due to concern that these apps were engaging in activities that threatened “national security and defense of India, which ultimately impinges upon the sovereignty and integrity of India”.
The move heeds a border clash between the two countries earlier this month that left at least 20 Indian soldiers dead.
TikTok ban undercuts ByteDance
Bytedance purchased Musical.ly for about $800 million in 2017.
They renamed it TikTok because musical.ly was also always known for lipsyncing. They wanted a brand new name that would draw people to the app and represent the people on the app better.
TikTok has a lot to overlook in the world’s second-most populous country.
India has been a great driver of new TikTok downloads, creating close to 660 million installs since its launch in 2017, according to analytics firm Sensor Tower.
However, in accordance with a report published by China’s state-run media.
The Global Times, ByteDance – the parent company of the TikTok and Helo apps could lose up to $6 billion( ₹45k crore) after the Indian government decided to ban them specifying concerns about privacy and national security of the country.
