#SafeHands: Why Deepika Padukone, Hima Das P. V. Sindhu are washing hands, a challenge by WHO

World Health Organization has launched #SafeHands challenge amidst Coronavirus scare. We look at some celebrities who have accepted it and posted videos.

World Health Organization has launched #SafeHands challenge amidst Coronavirus scare. Director-General of the World Health Organization Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, is reiterating people that washing hands with soap or hand rub that is alcohol-based. As per the WHO procedure for hand wash is as follows:

  • In a cupped hand, apply the soap covering all surfaces;
  • Hands are to be rubbed palm to palm;
  • Next right palm on the left dorsum with
    interlaced fingers and the other way around
  • Then rub palm to palm with interwoven fingers;
  • With interlocked fingers, back of fingers are to be rubbed by opposing palms;
  • Rubbing of left thumb clasped in right palm and the other way around with a revolution of thumbs
  • Rotational rubbing, backwards and forwards with clasped fingers of the proper hand in left palm and the other way around

At the end of the video, Director-General calls the world to take on the #SafeHands challenge and fight against coronavirus.

Indian celebrities who have accepted the #SafeHands challenge:

Various well known international and national figures have accepted the #SafeHands challenge and have also nominated others for the same.

Deepika Padukone

Deepika was nominated by Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus along with Priyanka Chopra, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Christy Turlington for #SafeHands challenge.

Deepika further nominated Roger Federer, Cristiano Ronaldo and Virat Kohli to post a video of them washing hand.


Hima Das

How can athletes stay away from the action? #SafeHands are most important for them. Hima Das also uploaded her video and challenged Bollywood actors Akshay Kumar, Tiger Shroff, legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, tennis sensation Sania Mirza, boxer Mary Kom, captain of Indian hockey team Rani Rampal for the challenge.


P. V. Sindhu

Professional badminton player was challenged by Katherine Hadda, a former diplomat. She nominated Kiren Rijiju, Virat Kohli and Sania Mirza. Kiren Rijiju accepted the challenge and decided to post his #SafeHands video.
