A list of Indian celebrities who died very mysterious deaths. Were they murdered or did they die a natural death?

Celebrities in India always live their lives in the public eye and out of them some left us a little too soon. Shockingly, these deaths are still remembered for their bizarre circumstances. Even after many years, many celeb death mysteries remain unsolved. Here is a list of sudden and mysterious deaths that rocked the nation and which remain unsolved till date:

Divya Bharti


At her career’s peak, she was considered one of the most promising Bollywood actresses after movies like Deewana and Vishwatma. However, Divya died when she was just 19-years old. She is supposed to have accidentally tumbled down from the fifth floor of her Mumbai apartment on April 5, 1993.

The case was considered an accident under the influence of alcohol, but many believe that it was an act of her husband Sajid Nadiadwala, a famous Bollywood producer who had married her secretly on the sets of Shola Aur Shabnam.

Parveen Babi


Parveen was the first-ever Bollywood star to grace the cover of the iconic Time Magazine in 1976. She also featured in a number of Bollywood blockbusters throughout the ’70s and ’80s. She was found dead in her home on January 22, 2005, under mysterious circumstances since she had been living an isolated life for many years prior to her death after her estranged relationship with Bollywood filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt.

She was rumored to be suffering from paranoid schizophrenia and it is not certain whether she committed suicide or if she died a natural death.

Kuljeet Randhawa


Model-turned-actress Kuljeet Randhawa famous for the serial C.A.T.S. was found dead at her apartment in Juhu with a suicide note that claimed that she wasn’t able to deal with the complexities of life.

Nafisa Joseph


Nafisa was the winner of the Femina Miss India Universe title in 1997 and one of the finalists of the Miss Universe 1997 pageant. She was also one of the most famous models in India and an MTV video jockey. She reportedly hanged herself in her apartment in Mumbai on July 29, 2004. Surprisingly, her wedding was called off just a few weeks before her death when she found out that her fiancée Gautam Khanduja (an Indian businessman) hadn’t told her about his first marriage.

Guru Dutt


The iconic director, producer, and actor of classics like Chaudhvin Ka Chand, Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, Pyaasa, etc. was found lifeless in his bed on October 10, 1964, due to allegedly consuming a deadly concoction of alcohol and sleeping pills. He was reportedly fighting depression for a long time and had attempted suicide twice prior to his death. It is not clear if his death was due to suicide or accidental overdose.

Shikha Joshi


Shikha Joshi was part of the Bollywood movie BA Pass. She allegedly committed suicide due frustration of not getting good acting roles in Bollywood. She is said to have ‘slit her throat’ at her MHADA flat in Versova, Mumbai.

She was one of India’s top models during her time. She allegedly hung herself from the ceiling fan in her flat and her diary mentioned ‘I kill’ as the last entry. It is suspected that a verbal spat with her boyfriend may have been the reason behind this step.

Manmohan Desai


The director credited with delivering classics like Coolie, Amar Akbar Anthony, and Dharam Veer was found dead after allegedly jumping off from his house’s balcony. He is said to have been depressed due to career issues and the fact that his back pain was mentally troubling him.

Kunal Singh


The newbie actor from the Bollywood ‘Dil Hi Dil Mein’ was allegedly found hanging from the ceiling fan of his house by actress Lavina Bhatia. However, she was later released after the police could not prove a motive against her for murdering Kunal. The actor’s father though, claims that his son was murdered.

Silk Smitha


Vijayalakshmi Vadlapati, better known by her stage name ‘Silk’ Smitha’s death is a major mystery. It is not clear what forced her to commit suicide at the peak of her career in 1996. She allegedly consumed poison, whereas as some reports claim that she hung herself due to rising debt.

Jiah Khan


The 25-year-old actress was a British-American actress and singer who appeared in three Hindi films namely Nishabd, Ghajini, and Housefull. She allegedly committed suicide on June 3, 2013, in Mumbai.

Later during investigations, her mother revealed that Jiah had expressed in a six-page handwritten note that she was being harassed and tortured mentally by her the-then boyfriend Sooraj Pancholi. However, forensic reports later confirmed that Jiah was under the influence of alcohol when she hanged herself. The case against Sooraj’s alleged involvement in her death is still in court.

Pratyusha Banerjee


The famous ‘Balika Vadhu’ actress allegedly committed suicide at her Mumbai residence in 2016.However, her family and close friends blame her boyfriend Rahul Raj Singh for her untimely demise by trying to extort money from her which eventually led her to financial turbulence and depression. Her post-mortem death ascertained the cause of her death to be ‘suffocation’ and that she was 2 months pregnant as well.

Sunanda Pushkar


Sunanda Pushkar was an elite businessperson, a socialite and the wife of an Indian diplomat, author, and politician Shashi Tharoor. A day after a public Twitter spat with a Pakistani journalist called Mehr Tarar (who allegedly was having an affair with Tharoor), Sunanda was found dead in her room at the Leela Palace hotel in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi on 17th January 2014.

Initially, the death was suspected to be suicide, but later reports stated that the cause of death was unnatural and that Sunanda had injury marks on her body.

Later, on 1 July 2014, AIIMS doctor, Sudhir Gupta who had given the initial autopsy report said that he was pressured into giving a false report. In a sharp twist, on October 10, 2014, the medical team probing her death concluded that she apparently died of poisoning, but on January 6, 2015, the Delhi Police reported that Sunanda was definitely murdered and filed an FIR was filed in this regard.



Sridevi was one of India’s most iconic actresses of all time with a total 300 movies and five Filmfare awards and Padma Shri to her credit. She died at the age of 54 on February 24, 2018, due to ‘accidental drowning in her Dubai hotel room’s bathtub following the loss of consciousness according to her post-mortem report. However, initial reports suggested that she died due to a cardiac arrest. Her fans are demanding re-investigation in this case.

How these beloved celebs died, no one will ever know! We can only pray that their souls rest in peace for eternity!
