Futuristic technologies that can help save our planet from impending doom
The human brain is a wonder in itself! We have made tremendous innovations right from the wheel to the International Space Station that have simply turned around our way of living and what we can achieve. However, with everything good comes something bad!
Our innovations are also somehow becoming a burden on our planet. Take for example micro-plastics and crude oil spills that have brought marine life to a standstill and threaten us with arsenic-poisoning-related cancer!
Fear not, as we said that with something good comes something bad, similarly with something bad, comes something good! There are silent crusaders on this planet developing some mind-boggling futuristic technologies that can help save this planet from sure-shot extinction!
Here’s a teeny list:
- Tidal Generators
Just like you have windmills whirring on the ground, we have tidal generators underwater. Since sea water is 1000 times denser than convection air, these generators are more efficient in producing large amounts of electricity. Since these are too costly to manufacture and install, this technology is slowly trying to become cost-effective.
- Vertical Farming
Since almost every country’s population is rising and cultivable land is decreasing, this method aims to grow our food on large indoor farms that have crops planted on stacked shelves. They are completely organic, have more output that conventional farms and are more environment adaptive.
- Biochar
We all know that charcoal is a massive source of carbon dioxide and is harmful to the planet’s ozone layer. Enter Biochar which is simply a mixture of charcoal and soil that helps reduce the harmful carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane that gets released into the air as greenhouse gases.
- Algae-based Oil
Studies have shown that oils from algae can be used to manufacture substitutes for butter, fats and eggs. Moreover, it can also be used to make industrial oil to help lubricate machinery.
- Mycelium instead of formaldehyde
Particle boards are made with formaldehyde which is a carcinogen (cancer-causing). Mycelium on the other hand is a natural lichen that can be used to grow stronger construction material and also manufacture biodegradable foam (yes, that is possible now!)
- Dry toilets
Also known as composting toilets, these marvels reduce the amount of water wasted in washing down your poop and compost it into something that can help become fertilizer for your garden crops.
- Waste-to-Energy Plants
These industrial plants trap the harmful methane emanating from their industrial effluents and use them to manufacture small amounts of electricity that can power smaller machinery or robots thereby reducing trash and harmful landfill waste.
- E-paper
A flexible display (Electrophoretic display) that looks and feels just like paper, but is reusable over and over again! It contains e-ink which substitutes harmful dyes. This ink can be charged with low current to display white and black patterns on the display to help you read what you like!
