Indian exports reach almost every country in the world you may know of, and what is most heartening to know is that some of these exports are really popular abroad and have made a strong consumer base outside of India! You would be proud to know that India exports approximately 7500 commodities to about 190 countries in the world! India exported close to US$ 264 billion worth of commodities in 2017!
India is the 7th largest country in the world is also the largest exporter to countries like Bhutan (95.7%), Guinea-Bissau (64.6%), Nepal (56.6%), Nigeria (34.0%), Equatorial Guinea (19.4%), Benin (14.3%) and United Arab Emirates (9.9%).
Here is a list of Indian exports that are sold across the world and have an Indian connection:
Bira91
Bira91 is slowly becoming a really popular beer brand in the US markets. In India, it has already made itself famous in the casual beer market.
Launched in 2015, this beer is already making headlines across the world! The company is headquartered in India, but has massive sales in New York’s craft beer market as well! It was also the official beer of the Tribeca Film Festival in 2016. Go India!
Lakme’ Cosmetics
Lakme is a well-known global brand in the cosmetics industry. It is owned by the Hindustan Unilever group which exports to more than 70 countries worldwide! It has a massive product line of about 300 diverse products which cater to different world societies and are serviced by their global brand identity – Lakme’ Exports Pvt. Ltd.
Saravanaa Bhavan
A south-Indian food joint which hails originally from Chennai now has outlets across the world which cater to Indians and foreigners alike! The chain rivals foods sold by Starbucks and McDonald’s and is described as the largest vegetarian restaurant chains in India and abroad!
As per Wikipedia, they have more than 33 outlets in India (20 outlets in Chennai) and 47 around the world (including Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Singapore, The Netherlands, Belgium, Malaysia, Thailand, the United States, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Mauritius and Sweden. WOW!
Godfrey Phillips
Godfrey Phillips India Ltd. is the flagship company of Modi Group and is one of the largest cigarette manufacturers in the world! The company manufactures Marlboro in India and exports it under a license agreement with Philip Morris International of USA.
The company’s other products (Four Square, Red and White, Cavanders cigarette brands, cut & blended tobacco, tobacco leaf, etc.) are exported to many countries of the Middle East, Africa, Asia, Europe, Australia and Latin America.
Jaguar
The brand is foreign, the heart is Indian! The brand is owned by the TATA conglomerate which acquired it from Ford Motor Company in 2008.
Jaguar is sold by its parent company Jaguar Land Rover which is headquartered in Coventry, United Kingdom. However, its actual parent company is the TATA group – India’s most iconic group ever!
Airtel
Airtel Africa is a subsidiary of Indian telecommunications company Airtel that operates in 17 countries across Africa. It operates a GSM network in all countries, providing 2G or 3G depending upon the country of operation.
Airtel, as you know, is the most-marketed telecom service in India and arguably the biggest telecom network (after merging with TATA Docomo) followed closely by Reliance Jio. Airtel is based in New Delhi, but it is the third-largest telecom brand in the world as well!
Joyce Foam Products
The company manufactures the largest range of flexible open-cell polyurethane foams in Australia which caters to various industries like bedding, furniture, medical, and specialist industrial applications.
Joyce Foam Products operates in five locations throughout Australia and one location in New Zealand, and supply product throughout Australasia.
Surprisingly, Joyce foam, Australia is a 100% subsidiary of the Sheela Group in India which sells the iconic Sleepwell range of mattresses in India!
Zara
The iconic fashion brand recently came under storm for selling skirts for women which actually resemble Indian lungis. Maybe, the products are exported from India only, who knows?!
Even then, the India connection is pretty visible isn’t it? The idea was obviously copied from India after all Zara has many outlets in India too!
Louis Philippe
The international brand caters to various age groups and genders in many countries. In India, it is known as the largest brand in the premier-lifestyle wear section.
Tata Global Beverages
In 1983, after the JV ended, the company was known as Tata Tea. TGB has acquired Tetley, Jemca, Eight O’ Clock Coffee, Himalayan, Vitax and Good Earth over the years to increase its global foothold.
TGB also has a 50:50 JV called Tata Starbucks with Starbucks too! No wonder Tata is so famous!
Bajaj Auto
Bajaj Auto is now ubiquitous for making Vespas since time immemorial. The company’s scooters, motorbikes, auto-rickshaws and electric vehicles are famous globally for their low cost and low maintenance requirements.
You can find Bajaj vehicles zipping around in South America, Central, and South East Asia and also in many parts of Europe! Bajaj is also currently the world’s largest manufacturer and exporter of three-wheelers today.
Godrej Group
Their global brand is split into two main companies – Godrej Industries Ltd and Godrej and Boyce. GIL operates in over 40 countries and exports to more than 60 overseas nations. G&B exports to major markets of Europe, US, Middle East, Africa and Asia.
This list is just a tiny speck from the plethora of global brands that have stemmed from India. Thanks to the ‘Make in India’ campaign and slashed export duties, we are now sending more of our Indian-made products globally.
